A quiet outing at the Gold Coast Chess Club meeting at Nerang last night. School holidays and the recent packed chess schedule accounted for many missing juniors. Organisers FM Dusan Stojic and WIM Alex Jule suggested an allegro round robin and so away we went.<\/p>\n

There is a trap called the Fishing Pole, and the main variation of it arises on the black side of the Ruy Lopez – I ran across a refresher while surfing youtube for chess videos – and yes it was a Mato video!<\/p>\n

The theme of the Fishing Pole is to sacrifice a bishop against a castled King on h2 or h7; then to be able to give a discovered check when sacrificing the 2nd piece on either g5 or g4 – it works when king-side defenders are deployed elsewhere especially if there is no knight covering the h2 or h7 square.<\/p>\n

Then the following position occurred in a French Defence Advanced variation against promising junior Ethan Carr. I worked out that if the knight sac was not accepted on g5 then white was still going to be exchange and 2 pawns and a loosened King for 2 pieces – so here goes!<\/p>\n
